Introduction

UNICEF has announced an internship program for its Humanitarian Field Support Section (HFSS) Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS) in New York, USA. Under the close observation of the chief of the Section (HFSS) in the Office of Emergency Programmes, the intern will work with the geographic desks in HFSS to support UNICEF’s humanitarian response in different regions of the world. Besides, the intern will also work with HQ inter-divisional focal points, inter-agency partners, regional emergency staff, and other field colleagues.

Duties and responsibilities

The intern shall be responsible for:

  • Closely overseeing the political and humanitarian developments in assigned countries and delivering inputs to HFSS desks for timely, analytical, and forward-looking assessments.
  • Analyzing and evaluating emergency preparedness in a defined number of countries, supporting UNICEF responses in complex emergencies and natural catastrophes.
  • Participating in and providing readouts from inter-agency meetings on specific countries / thematic issues and from Security Council sessions.
  • Reviewing working papers and reports (including UNICEF situation reports) for accuracy and clearness.
  • Assisting the HFSS desks in preparing for meetings with the Office of the Executive Director, Emergency Director, etc.
  • Undertaking other duties likely to be delegated by relevant staff and/or by the Chief of Section.

Qualifications

An eligible applicant should meet the below requirements:

  • Be studying for a bachelor’s, master or Ph.D. degree program or have graduated within the last two years.
  • Own exceptional academic standing as proven by recent university or institution records.
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) who work for any UNICEF office; or in the line of authority to which your reporting would pertain.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an advantage.
  • Any past professional experience will be given additional weight.
