Applications are now open for the Radcliffe Fellowship Program 2022-2023. Harvard Radcliffe institute provides fellowships to individuals who are outstanding scientists, authors, scholars, public intellectuals, experts, and artists who are creating a difference in their professional fields and in the larger world.

The fellowships are awarded to fellows who wish to pursue a nine-month fellowship at Harvard University, United States. Having access to Harvard’s unmatched resources, Radcliffe fellows develop and share their work progress, they challenge each other’s ideas and support each other’s ambitions.

Fellowship Program Details

  • Radcliffe Institute fellowship awardees are in residence for a period of nine months in the US.  Fellows are expected to have full commitments and fully devote themselves to the work outlined in their proposal.
  • Fellows are expected to reside in the Greater Boston area during their residential fellowship.
  • Radcliffe institute offer Fellows office or studio space in Byerly Hall and full-time Harvard appointments as visiting fellows, giving them access to Harvard University’s various resources, including libraries, housing, and athletic facilities. In case fellows would like to hire Harvard undergraduate scholars as Research Partners, Radcliffe Institute will cover their hourly wages, too.
  • Radcliff expects its fellows to engage actively with the coworkers in their cohort and to partake fully as a member of the Radcliffe community. Therefore, all fellows present their work-in-progress, either in the format of a private talk for their cohort or a public lecture, besides attending the presentations of all other fellows during that academic year (up to two talks per week).

Fellows will receive:

  • $78,000 as a stipend
  • An additional $5,000 for research expenses

Applicants should meet the following criteria to apply:

  • It is open to scientists, authors, scholars, public intellectuals, and artists whose work has a unique difference in their professional areas and in the larger world;
  • Candidates may apply as individuals or in a group of two to three people involved in the same project;
  • Radcliff seeks diversity along many dimensions, including discipline, career stage, race and ethnicity, country or source, gender and sexual orientation, and ideological perspective.
  • applicants in humanities and social sciences must:
    1. Have received their doctorate (or appropriate terminal degree) in the area of their proposed project at least two years prior to their appointment as a fellow (December 2021 for the 2023-24 fellowship year).
    2. Have published a monograph or at least two articles in refereed journals or edited collections.
    3. Applicants applying to Engineering, mathematics, and science should:
      1.  Have received their doctorate in the area of the proposed project at least two years prior to their appointment as a fellow (December 2021 for the 2023-24 fellowship year).
      2. Have published at least five articles in refereed journals. Most science, engineering, and math fellows have published dozens of articles.** This is not intended to serve as a post- doctoral fellowship. Applicants must demonstrate a strong body of independent research and writing.

Applicants for creative arts should meet the field-specific requirement:Film and Video: have a body of independent work of significant achievement, exhibited in galleries, or museums, showing video or film festivals, or broadcast on TV.Visual arts: Show strong evidence of achievement with a record of at least 5 years of professional work as artist.Fiction and nonfiction: have one of the following: 1) one or more published books, 2) contract for the publication of a book-length manuscript; or 3) at least three shorter works (longer than newspaper articles) published.Poetry: Applicants in this discipline must have had published at least 20 poems in the last five years or published a book of poetry, and must be in the process of completing a manuscript.Journalism: Applicants in this discipline are required to have worked professionally as a journalist for at least five years.Playwriting: Applicants in this discipline must have a significant body of independent work in the form. This will include, most typically, plays produced or under option.Music Composition: It is desirable, but not required, for applicants in music composition to have a PhD or DMA. Most importantly, the applicant must show strong evidence of achievement as a professional artist, with a record of recent performances

Evaluation criteria

Each application undergoes a two-tiered review process–first by experts in the related field, then by a multidisciplinary committee responsible for selecting a diverse class of fellows of the maximum achievement and potential.

So, it considers at most:

  • The quality and importance of the proposed project
  • The applicant’s intellectual and innovative capacity as evidenced by a strong track record or exceptional promise.
  • Project proposals should be novel, well-conceived, imaginative, and practical.
